Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham – The current mood within the Hindi film industry

Nope, I am not writing a piece on Karan Johar’s much-loved family saga KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM. Frankly, the title justifies the current mood within the industry. On one hand we are celebrating the revival of the Hindi film industry, but, on the flip side, with most star-studded films opening to dismal/disastrous response, the feelings are mixed within the industry.
RADHE SHYAM, BACHCHHAN PAANDEY, ATTACK, JERSEY, RUNWAY 34, HEROPANTI 2, JAYESHBHAI JORDAAR and DHAAKAD. The BO numbers of these films — all starring prominent names — are alarming. BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2 brought in the much-needed relief, but look what happened to ANEK, which followed a week later. Frankly, there are anek reasons for the above-named films not opening well, but, the prime reason is the moviegoers’ focus has shifted to larger-than-life, well-made entertainers.
BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2 has brought abundant cheer within and outside the film fraternity. Last year, a section of the media had labelled Kartik Aaryan the most unprofessional actor for his ‘unethical conduct’ with a reputed production house. The media did an about turn this year. He has been called the saviour thanks to BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2.
Kartik Aaryan must be feeling euphoric and rightly so. At a time when most films are struggling to fetch a face-saving start on Day 1, BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2 has already hit century and is marching towards greater glories. A hugely profitable venture for producers Bhushan Kumar and Murad Khetani, BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2 should also put a stop to the loose talk that moviegoers aren’t interested in Bollywood entertainers.
The super success of BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2 heralds the comeback of Anees Bazmee. The talented writer-director faced scathing criticism when PAGALPANTI met with a disastrous fate. Bazmee has delivered several successes in the past, but one mistake, one failure, one under-performer and people are ready to pounce on you, write you off, call you spent force, disregard your past honours, laurels and achievements in one stroke. Am glad Bazmee silenced the detractors with BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2.
