Written by Atishwar Chand on March 8, 2024
Madhu Mala’s extraordinary journey unfolds against the backdrop of Labasa, where she, as the only daughter, faced unique challenges that shaped her into a resilient force. Her early years were marked by daily walks to Coqeloa Sangam School, showcasing her determination to pursue education despite the physical toll.
Originally aspiring to become a nurse, Madhu’s trajectory shifted when life led her towards welding and fabrication during her studies in Automotive Engineering. The support of her family, especially her uncle Rohit Chandra, became a pillar as she embraced a field dominated by men, challenging stereotypes every step of the way.
Her apprenticeship, which began with a stint at Asco Motors and Industrial Sheet Metal Naseakula, was not without its hurdles. Facing underestimation from colleagues, Madhu’s passion and unwavering goal kept her forging ahead, creating enduring memories while working on ships in Walu Bay.
Madhu’s transition to teaching in 2018 added another layer to her journey, breaking new ground as an industrial art teacher at Rishikul Sanatan College. Her story is an anthem of empowerment, urging women and girls to persevere and overcome societal expectations.
The struggles of walking on foot to school, the unexpected shift in career aspirations, and the challenges faced in a male-dominated field collectively shape Madhu’s narrative. Her journey reflects not only personal triumphs but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for others facing adversity.
As Madhu continues her educational pursuit with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, her story resonates with Indira Gandhi’s wisdom: “To be a liberated woman, she must feel free to be herself.” Madhu Mala’s life is a testament to the idea that dreams can be forged against all odds, and gender should never be a hindrance to one’s aspirations.
And now, as an Assistant Lecturer at Fiji National University, Madhu Mala continues to illuminate the path for others, proving that empowerment knows no boundaries.
