First look of Anushka Sharma as cricketer Jhulan Goswami in Chakda Xpress out! Writes long note to share why film is special

In a piece of news that is sure to send waves of happiness among fans of Anushka Sharma, the Bollywood actress is all set for her comeback. Anushka, who last graced the big screen in Aanand L Rai’s Zero, has returned to acting and this time, in the role of a cricketer.

The actress has stepped in the shoes of former Indian cricket team captain Jhulan Goswami for her biopic titled Chakda Xpress. Anushka dropped the trailer of the Netflix special on Thursday morning and it’s certainly an impressive one.

Anushka, who is married to cricketer Virat Kohli, also penned an elaborate post explaining why this film is a special one for her. Calling it an “eye-opener into the world of women’s cricket,” Anushka wrote: “At a time when Jhulan decided to become a cricketer and make her country proud on the global stage, it was very tough for women to even think of playing the sport. This film is a dramatic retelling of several instances that shaped her life and also women’s cricket.

The actress also opened up about the problems cricketer Jhulan had to face in the industry. From support systems to facilities, to having a stable income from playing the game, to having a future in cricket – there wasn’t much that motivated women to take up cricket as a profession. Jhulan, however, stay motivated and was determined to make her country proud.

About Jhulan, Anushka explained: “Her life is a living testimony that passion and perseverance triumphs over any or all adversities and Chakda Xpress is the most definitive look into the not so rosy world of women’s cricket back then.”

The actress stressed on Jhulan and her teammates’ contribution in revolutionising women’s cricket in India. “As a woman, I was proud to hear Jhulan’s story and it is an honour for me to try and bring her life to audiences and cricket lovers. As a cricketing nation, we have to give our women cricketers their due,” read a part of her note on social media.
