A woman working as a copywriter in a tech startup revealed that she had been fired by her company and ChatGPT replaced her at her job. She then became a dog walker.
People across the world are concerned about the possibility of their job being taken away by generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Bing and Bard. While some believe that AI tools can never compete with the human mind, others are looking at the possibility of jobs being automated and humans being replaced. A woman, who used to work as a copywriter for a tech startup, says that she was replaced at her job by ChatGPT. However, instead of hunting for another opportunity in a similar field, the woman chose to leave the corporate world altogether and became a dog walker instead. Well, that’s quite an interesting career choice as who wouldn’t love to be surrounded by furry friends all day long and actually get paid to spend time with them?
According to a report by The Washington Post, the woman, named Olivia Lipkin, hails from San Francisco and worked as the only writer of a tech company. The 25-year-old didn’t ‘think too much’ about ChatGPT when the AI chatbot was launched by OpenAI in November 2022. However, gradually, she saw that articles on how to use the chatbot began surfacing on her office’s internal Slack group. Eventually, months later in April, Lipkin was fired without any explanation, the report says. She was even referred to as ‘Olivia/ChatGPT’ on the office’s Slack group.
Lipkin further said that when she saw her managers writing about how using ChatGPT would cost less than paying a writer, the reason of her layoff was evident – the AI tool had replaced her at her job.
“Whenever people brought up ChatGPT, I felt insecure and anxious that it would replace me,” she told The Washington Post and added, “Now I actually had proof that it was true, that those anxieties were warranted, and now I was actually out of a job because of AI.”
After being fired from her job, Lipkin considered venturing into content marketing, but the job was draining her mentally and she was not getting any time to write for herself. Hence, to avoid all of this, she decided to take a break from the office world and is currently working as a dog walker.
“I’m totally taking a break from the office world,” she told the publication and added, “People are looking for the cheapest solution, and that’s not a person — that’s a robot.”
